The State Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh invites applications for full-time contractual engagement of Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsels and Office Assistant/Clerk under the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System (LADCS) at the District Legal Services Authority, U.T., Chandigarh. This system, introduced under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), is modeled on the Public Defender System to provide legal aid in criminal cases from the pre-arrest stage to final appeal.

Positions and Vacancies
There are two positions available for Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel and one position for Office Assistant/Clerk.

Duration and Nature of Engagement
The engagement is purely on a contractual basis for a period of two years, which may be extended annually based on performance. Selected legal counsels will not be permitted to undertake any private practice or retainership during their period of engagement.

Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel – Details
Eligibility:
Applicants must hold a law degree and have 0 to 3 years of practice in criminal law. They should have good oral and written communication skills, strong ethical awareness, ability to work in teams, and proficiency in legal research and IT.
Job Role Includes:
- Filing and trial work in Magistrate courts
- Handling remand, bail, and related criminal litigation
- Conducting legal research and supporting the defense team
- Providing pre-arrest legal assistance and engaging with clients
- Visiting prisons, assisting in strategy development, and maintaining case files
- Handling phone-based legal queries and other duties assigned by the Legal Services Authority
Monthly Honorarium: ₹45,000

Office Assistant/Clerk – Details
Eligibility:
Candidates must be graduates and possess computer proficiency, data entry skills, good typing speed, and document preparation abilities. They must be able to take dictation, maintain organized legal files, and handle administrative duties efficiently.
Job Role Includes:
- Maintaining and updating legal aid case records
- Uploading case data to NALSA’s portal and other digital systems
- Typing petitions and managing documents
- Performing clerical tasks such as applying for certified copies and preparing files
- Supporting the legal aid team and undertaking tasks assigned by the Legal Services Authority
Monthly Honorarium: ₹22,000
